A joint symposium featuring many doctoral students from three universities, inviting Tokyo University of the Arts and Musashino Art University.

-About the symposium-
Doctoral programs at art universities are still not widely known in the public. A major feature of doctoral programs at art universities is that in addition to producing artwork, students are also required to write a lengthy doctoral dissertation. In other words, in addition to being an artist who produces artwork, students are also required to have a critical perspective that verbalizes and contextualizes the work.
In today's contemporary art, artists are required to be able to explain in words the concept of their work and the context behind it. Doctoral programs at art universities are a place where students can hone not only non-verbal abilities (artistic sensibility) but also linguistic abilities (logical thinking and ability to explain things verbally) through the process of writing a doctoral thesis, nurturing talent who possess both abilities.
The symposium will introduce internationally diverse art university doctorates whose existence is still relatively unknown, and will also have an in-depth discussion of the linguistic skills required of contemporary artists.
This symposium, "Art Universities and Doctoral Programs - Works and Words," is a related event to the Tama Art University Doctoral Program Exhibition "Challenge Art in Japan 2017 #TAMABI_HAKASE," currently being held at the Korean Cultural Center, and will feature a talk session inviting current doctoral students from not only Tama Art University, but also Tokyo University of the Arts and Musashino Art University. (For the profiles of the speakers, please refer to the list of speakers below.)
We welcome participation from not only those who are interested in obtaining a doctorate from an art university, but also those who are interested in the question of "how should contemporary artists handle words?"

The 2017 Graduation Exhibition will be held at Musashino Art University Takanodai Campus until the 21st. Saori Matsushita ( http://matsushitasaori.com/ ), a second-year student in the Art Production Department of the Graduate School of Musashino Art University, who spoke at the symposium, will be exhibiting her work independently in the 503 Atelier on the 5th floor of Building 2.
Although it will be held during the same period as the 2017 Graduation Exhibition, please note that it is not an official event but rather an independent exhibition. The dates are as follows:

-研究テーマ-
SFなどの創作物において表象されてきた、サイボーグやアンドロイドなどの人工的身体や人工生命に関心を抱いている。主なリサーチ対象は主に19世紀から今日に至るまでの表象文化の系譜と、既に実現されている、あるいは今日実現されつつあるテクノロジーである。ヒューマノイドロボットや高度生殖医療などの技術的進歩によって変遷しつつある、新たな身体観や生殖の在り方を作品のテーマとし、人形・写真・映像などのメディアを用いて、「未来の母」の姿を描く試みに近年取り組んでいる。
